The road maintenance services (STED) of the federal states have the legal duty to keep the
immediate vicinity of roads free of vegetation. The STED of the state of Styria, for example,
is responsible for around 5000 km of roads, which, with an average mowing width of 5 m on
both sides of the road, corresponds to a mowing area of around 5000 ha. The mowing work on these
huge areas is to be optimized in SmartMowAI for various aspects: (a) reducing the kilometers
driven by the mowing vehicles and the associated CO2 savings, (b) preserving the biodiversity
of the meadows by mowing as little and as late as possible in order to avoid monocultures
and (c) keeping the wildlife warning devices clear to reduce wildlife accidents. To this end,
artificial intelligence (AI) methods are to be significantly expanded in order to be able
to derive growth heights and create an optimized mowing concept from this. Particular
emphasis is placed on the quality of the prediction and the speed of evaluation, which can only
be achieved using Vision Transformer technology.
The main task of pentamap in SmartMowAI will be the realization of the Proof-of-Concept (PoC),
which is divided into three phases: design, implementation and evaluation.
Informationen to SmartMowAI can be found on the
factsheet.
Alpine meadows are an important natural resource for livestock farming, forestry, recreation and
tourism in alpine regions. However, these open landscape areas, which characterize the alpine
region, are threatened by natural succession and the invasion of invasive species. Ecologically
and economically sensible monitoring and removal of bushes and young trees is extremely complex
due to the challenging alpine topography. In the course of the RoboAlm project,
expertise from the fields of earth observation, navigation, ecology and robotics is being
combined to design a prototype workflow for dealing with the problem of bush encroachment on
alpine meadows and to develop the methods required for implementation. The aim is to find a
holistic solution for automating these activities, from planning and implementation to evaluation
and documentation.
In RoboAlm, pentamap is responsible for the semi-automatic creation of digital accessibility
maps for the global navigation of the robots.
New “exotic” vectors (arthropods) are the best way to establish themselves in Austria or have already done so. With these vectors
also an increased risk of previously non-endemic pathogens will be brought into our latitudes. The research project
“ClimateDiseaseRisk – Modeling of vector-borne diseases” intends to build a system that that can deal with these challenges in
the future. As an example, work should be carried out with mosquitoes and ticks at the same time. However, the system can be
converted to other vectors and pathogens with minor adaptations.
pentamap is responsible for project management and GIS tasks in the project.
Informationen about ClimateDiseaseRisk can be found on the
factsheet of the project.
In the research project "ScubaPOIs - GNSS surveyed underwater POIs", technological requirements for measuring and
navigating to POIs (Points of Interest) underwater will be developed. These underwater POIs will subsequently flow into an underwater GIS.
During the runtime of ScubaPOIs the technical implementation and transition to the prototype phase should be made. The goal is to achieve
product maturity and commercialize the system via the industrial partners involved.
pentamap is responsible for the consortium management and the implementation of the underwater GIS.
Informationen to ScubaPOIs can be found on the
factsheet.
The aim of "WildWarn - Satellite-based warning of accidents involving wildlife" is to examine risk sections in the road network
where accidents involving wildlife occur more frequently, based on satellite data. Danger zones along streets should be modeled
using a variety of different data sources (satellite-supported, street-side collected or existing data such as traffic volumes,
speed levels). This modeling is intended to enable prediction in order to take appropriate countermeasures before accidents occur.
The results should be made available to various user groups, e.g. hunting associations, infrastructure operators and vehicle drivers.
In the “AnimalProtect” project, pentamap was significantly involved in implementing a demonstrator navigation app based on
modeled wildlife accident risk zones in model regions. In WildWarn, pentamap will, on the one hand, collect carrion data using
Deermapper and, on the other hand, GIS interfaces for the WildWarn results will be implemented.
Information about the project can be found on the
factsheet of WildWarn.
On January 1st, 2022 the project ROADS to Health started - decision support for the pandemic management of the future.
In the FFG-KIRAS research project basics for a situation-related matching of measures for pandemics and epidemics are developed.
pentamap is responsible for spatial data analysis and dissemination coordination.
Information about the project can be found at
factsheet of ROADS.
ScubaNav builds on the projects RemoteNav and UniNav.
In ScubaNav, based on a terrestrially supported GNSS pseudolite system, underwater positioning on a terminal is investigated analogously to conventional GNSS-based positioning systems.
pentamap is working on the software design on the planned end devices. Information about the project can be found at the
factsheet of ScubaNav.
The objective of Infrahealth is the satellite-supported monitoring of critical infrastructure.
GNSS-based receivers, which record static and high-frequency movements of infrastructure buildings, are investigated as core technologies.
pentamap is responsible for the web-based visualization of project results. Information about the project can be found at the
factsheet of InfraHealth.
DeerAI aims to automatically detect game animals in trail camera images.
Based on classified images, an AI system is to be developed, which is based on a trail camera image
information such as number of animals, game species, individual individuals, people and vehicles.
Information about the project can be found at the
factsheet of DeerAI.
On January 1, 2021, pentamap mapping services OG will be transferred to pentamap GmbH.
A nice article in newspaper Kurier about the use of Deermapper can be found at following Link.
Start of the FFG project RoboNav as part of a consortium with TU Graz, the Disaster Competence Network Austria, the Start-up ARTI - Autonomous Robot Technology GmbH and the Federal Ministry of Defense. The goal of the 24-month project is the development of routing algorithms for autonomous robots. A demonstrator is to be created in RoboNav, which should be able to navigate robots with additional charging and sensors to locations that cannot be reached by road.
With the concept "BusPilot - a dynamic guide for coaches" pentamap takes part in the IÖB-Challenge "Management system for an optimized occasional bus service". You can find information here .
Start of the FFG project UniNav as part of a consortium with TU Graz, the Disaster Competence Network Austria, UNITAR-UNOSAT, the Austrian Red Cross Styria and the Institute for Military Geosciences. UniNav has a term of 24 months. The project goal is the development of a navigation algorithm for emergency services of the Austrian Red Cross and the Austrian Armed Forces operating off-streets. The Factsheet gives a brief overview of the project.
Since autumn 2019, pentamap has had an intensive cooperation with the Österreischische Hundzeitung

DynTrans aims to develop a concept for dynamic public transport systems based on existing transport networks and satellite positioning. Together with the developers of pgRouting an ESA-funded Kickstart-Activity in the field of "People Mobility" will be performed until end of 2018.
For a hotel association in Wagrain, Austria, a dispatching solution based on pgRouting coordinating the guest transport was implemented. The optimal vehicle fleet is calculated for up to 3000 passenger transports per day and is available to the hotels as a basis for their planning and negotiations with haulers.
